bit. new details on the shooting of an alameda sheriff's deputy. we have exclusive video of the response. ktvu was in a ride along with the sergeant when the call for help came over the radio. >> shots fired. shots fired. >> where? where? >> that's it. >> got it. >> they shot the exclusive video and they sped to the scene and it is the 40:00 last night. they found the suspect's suv crashed into a building and they were shot in the foot. >> gunfire broke out and deputies tried to arrest the driver. >> that's when things went sideways. they were trying to get him out. he put the car in drive and two cops were going down the street and dragging one of the deputies with them. >> that deputy started shooting after he was dragged. >> they did find a gun in the suv and the suspect died overnight and the injured deputy will be okay.

>> a suspected drunk driver ran into a sheriff's deputy in oakland. they were on the way to the hospital to support their injured colleague. they smashed into the side of the patrol car and the driver was arrested for suspicion of dui and the deputy was not hurt. tradition is underway in the highest peak. ktvu's lorraine blanco is live on mount davidson covering the sunday service for us. >> reporter: good morning, mike. it is beautiful up here. the service started a few minutes ago in mount davidson. highest peak in san francisco. so many make the trek up here. this is the largest cross in america. standing 13 feet tall. it was illuminated by 1000 watts yesterday evening. the sun advise easter service is a popular annual tradition

in overnight news, they try to figure out what led to a mysterious car fire. >> flames were shooting out of the cars here. that's where they arrived at the off ramp in oakland at 3:00 a.m. the car had accident damage on the front and back. the driver was nowhere to be found. >> chp believes whoever was driving lost control and tried to get off the highway and when the car caught fire on the ramp. a child has been wounded by gunfire in the east bay. latest shooting happened yesterday afternoon. 7-year-old boy was shot at a family barbecue and police think the shots were fired into the backyard from an area near the g street overcrossing. the boy was airlifted to the hospital. and expect the to survive. he was visiting with husband parents and they have not made any arrests in the case. >> it is after a 10-year-old girl was grazed by a shooting in east oakland.

she was playing near 82nd avenue and a street when the shots were fired. on thursday 1-year-old baby was hit in the next by a bullet fragment. someone started shooting outside the apartment complex and they were visiting relatives. his family said he is recovering. people living in three bay area counties have to pay the highest sales tax. >> the rate will go up to 9%. santa clara residents have to pay 8.57% and in marin county, that is going to move up to 8.5%. 23 cities will see increases where people have to pay 9.5%. the new increases are in addition to the proposition 30 statewide sales tax increase that went into effect on january 1st. not necessarily the wettest month we had when it comes to 2,013. we are ending on a wet note. >> you are right. somebody on facebook said it

we are trying to figure out what happened. >> the suspect was shot every times and died in a hospital overnight. his name is not yet released. he is expected to survive the sheriff's office and the oakland police are investigating. >> right now. an eastern morning tradition is underway in san francisco. channel 2 reporter lorraine blanco is there covering our sunday service. lorraine? >> reporter: you could see the whole city and best view of the largest cross in america. this cross stands 103 feet tall and it is illuminated by spot lights. all pore the popular sunrise service that started with bagpipes. the easter service is an annual service for christians. they have been climbing mount davidson for 99 years.

i was afraid. and now, it is like, it happened between themselves. >> investigators say the victim was shot after a car pulled up and asked if he was in a gang. >> they collected surveillance video to see if that will help them find the shooter. >> an 18-year old man is in custody near the bay fair bart station. >> he was arrested on friday. >> they called him the main suspect in the death of kenneth seats. two groups engaged in a gun battle at the bay fair station in january s two other suspects were arrested about a week after the shooting. >> in pleasant hill. an off duty firefighter is credited with rescuing three people and they included a woman in a wheelchair. >> it happened at 4:30 on pleasant hill road. the fire started in the garage. and collapsing the roof in the

kitchen. >> they will be evacuated by someone in the fire department. we are not sure who that is. >> there were people in the house. one was an invalid. and someone did some good work. >> no one was hurt. the cause of the fire is being investigated. >> san jose firefighter who suffered a heart attack is returning to duty. >> tomorrow, santa fe firefighters will welcome back frank ryan. he suffered a heart attack while fighting a fire at a downtown church. >> they supported him through his recovery and raised money to fly his family members to san jose. >> they planned to celebrate at fire station one in downtown san jose. >> two men suspected of stealing gold from a courthouse are from the bay area. >> they issued warranties for david dean johnson. and 51 year old scott wayne bailey. now the break in happened in

. welcome back on this holiday sunday. a look over there. and a bit after gloomy start. showers in the forecast for sunday. >> 18-year-old man is arrested for a crash in nevada that killed members of a family. it is near mesquite and 80 miles northeast of las vegas. the nevada highway patrol who said the young man was from california he hit a chevy astro van from behind. >> total of seven passengers in the chevy astro van. and five of the seven were ejected from the van as they rolled over. >> three men and two women. they were killed. and two other members of the family were hospitalized and in critical condition. >> the driver was arrested for driving under the influence. a san francisco woman was hit by a car in the west port

the car. when our crew arrived at the claremont avenue off-ramp in oakland around 3 this morning, the car had accident damage in the front and back but that driver nowhere to be found. the chp believes whoever was driving lost control, hit a guard rail, tried to get off the highway and ran away when the car caught fire starting tomorrow, people in three bay area counties will have to pay some of the highest sales taxing in the state. san mateo county, the sales tax rate goes up to 9%. santa clara county residents will have to pay 8.75% and marin county sales tax will bump up to 8.5%. 24 cities will also see increases, including al company, where people will -- albany, where people will have to pay 9.5%. these new increase are in addition to the proposition 30 statewide sales tax increase that went into effect on january 1. astronaut to advocate, speaking out about the neither for gun control. >> it is important to take action, and the american people

giffords was seriously injured in a shooting rampage two years ago in tucson. the man who shot her passed a background, despite evidence of mental illness. an investigation is now under way into the shooting deaths of a north texas county district attorney and his wife. district attorney mike mcclellan and his wife cynthia were found dead yesterday in their home in coffman. the mayor of coffman says the shootings do not appear to be random. their deaths come just two months after an assistant district attorney was gunned down outside the county courthouse. investigators do not know if the deaths are connected. governor jerry brown has used the easter weekend to grant pardons to 65 people. governor jerry brown has used the pardons to go to people with drug convictions. one convicted murderer was also pardoned. all of them were released from prison more than 10 years ago and haven't committed any crimes since. this is the second time in the last year that governor brown has announced pardons the day before a religious holiday.

block the signal. tomorrow hundreds of patients will be tested for hiv and hepatitis after a scare at a dental office in oklahoma. yesterday, hundreds of dental patients lined up to get their tests, but only 420 guests were actually completed. that's only a fraction of the 7000 people who were sent notices. health inspectors say the dentist used poor hygiene exposing patients to hiv and hepatitis. so far charges have not been filed against the dentist. his practice has been shut down while officials investigate. a southern california teenager is fighting to recover after losing four limbs when she became infected with a deadly form of meningitis. the family of kaitlin dabreaux has set up a website to help raise money towards her recovery and it's already been a pretty big success. the family says people across the nation have shown a lot of support. their goal was to raise $25,000 but donations now total more than $37,000. san francisco emergency officials want to make sure everyone is prepared for a

[ singing ] >> the vatican said around 250,000 people gathered at the traditional open air mass for the new pope's first easter address. the pope used the occasion to call for a diplomatic solution to end tensions involving north korea. he also called for peace between israelis and palestinians and an end to the civil war in syria. [ bagpipes ] the sound of bagpipes kicked off an easter morning tradition in san francisco. a large group of people went to the city's highest peak this morning for the annual sunrise servicest beneath the 103 foot tall mount davidson cross. christians have been hiking up mount davidson for the easter service for 91 years. and people attended easter sunday service in jerusalem at a church known as the

we now know the young man killed yesterday morning in the mission district was college student home for spring break. friends identified him as jacob valdiviezo. he was a graduate of high school studying and playing football at lewis & clark college in oregon. the 19-year-old was shot while walking home with a friend yesterday morning. a woman who runs the store near the scene says shootings happen too often and the majority are gang related >> at the beginning when i came here i was so afraid of the shootings. but now it's like -- it happened between 10:30. >> yesterday officers collected surveillance video from nearby stores to see if any clues could be seen to help locate the gunmen. for the third time in three days a child has been wounded by gun fire in the east bay. the latest shooting happened yesterday in antioc. a ask st-year-old boy was shot at a family barbecue on william reid drive. the shots were fired into the backyard from an area near g

street overcrossing. the boy was air lifted to the hospital and is expected to survive. police haven't made any arrests. the shooting comes one day after a 10-year-old girl was grazed by flying debris in east oakland. the girl was out playing when shots were fired. and on thursday a one-year-old boy was hit in the neck by a stray bullet fragment in richmond. someone started shooting outside the apartment complex where one-year-old elijah ali was visiting relatives. elijah's family says he is recovering. an 18-year-old man is in custody in connection with the fatal shewelling near the bay fair bart station in san leandro. police say jabrie bennett was arrested in oakland on friday. police has called him their main suspect in the death of 50- year-old ken lee seats. investigators say seets was shot when two groups engaged in a gun battle at the bus area in january. two other suspects were arrested a week after the shooting. in pleasant hill an off-

duty firefighter is credited with rescuing three people from a house fire including a woman in a wheelchair. it happened about 4:30 yesterday afternoon. firefighters say the flames started in the garage then moved into the home through the attic, collapsing the roof in the kitchen. >> there were people in the house and they were being evacuated by somebody who identified himself as a lieutenant in the fire department. not sure who that is. we're searching to find out who they were. there were people in the house. one was confine to a wheelchair. >> no one was hurt and the cause of the fire is being investigated. a san jose firefighter who suffered heart attack while fighting a fire last year is returning to duty. tomorrow san jose firefighters welcome back frank ryan. he suffered heart attack on august 30th while fighting a fire at a downtown church. san jose firefighters supported ryan through his recovery. and even raised money to fly his family members to san jose. they plan to celebrate tomorrow morning at fire station 1 in downtown san jose. an 18-year-old man has been arrested for a crash in nevada

that killed five members of a california family. the crash happened early saturday morning on interstate 15 near mesquite. 80 miles northeast of las vegas. the nevada highway patrol says the young man who was also from california was driving a dodge durango that hit a chevy astro van from behind. >> there were a total of seven passengers in the chevy astro van. five of those seven were ejected from the van as it rolls over. >> three men and two women in that chevy astro van were killed. two other members of their family were hospitalized and are listed in critical condition. the suspect driving the durango was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. a memorial is being held today for a san francisco woman who was hit by a car in the city's west portal neighborhood. 68-year-old tanya madfest and her husband were both crossing the street when a driver struck them. she suffered severe brain trauma and later died at the hospital. her husband is recovering from a leg injury. today's memorial begins at

11:00 at the congregation beth salom. two businesses in sonoma are cited for selling alcohol to minors. police conduct ade coy operation at boys spring food center on state highway 12. they sent minors into the businesses to see if they would be sold alcohol. the employees of both locations were cited. the businesses are also being referred to the department of alcoholic beverage control. starting tomorrow, police officers will fan out all over the state as part of a distracted driving crack-down campaign. officers will be looking for drivers who are texting or are talking while holding their cell phones. statewide numbers show more than 425,000 tickets were given out last year for people using their phones while driving. in 2011, more than 3300 people were killed in crashes blamed on distracted driving. if you get a ticket, it will cost you about $159. well, someone from the bay area may be the owner of a winning lotto ticket worth $265,000.

california high schooler accused of shooting a classmate may reveal more about his mindset. the bakersfield californian reports investigators found a story online by 16-year-old brian oliver. it features a character who was bullied by his peers and later kills his tormenters. oliver was reportedly bullied before opening fire at cap union high school near bakersfield in january. the shooting injured two people. oliver is being charged as an adult. he has pleaded not guilty. his next court hearing is set for may. two events are planned to mark the anniversary of the shooting in oakland. tuesday marks one year since a gunman killed seven people and injured three others at the school. oycos will host a memorial concert in oakland on saturday and another in sacramento on april 13. a former nursing student has been charged in the case. a judge declared he is not competent to stand trial. he is being held in the mental hospital located in napa. we're learning the two men suspected of stealing more than a million dollars worth of gold

from a siscu county courthouse are from the bay area. wanters have been issued for 49- year-old david dean johnson of el vito and 51-year-old scott wayne bailey on friday. the break-in happened in february of 2012. you're looking at surveillance video that captured it while it happened. officials say the two men stole gold jewelry and other historic artifacts from that display case which was inside the courthouse. detectives say some of these stolen items may have already been sold. state lawmakers plan to take up a bill next week that would make it easier to discipline and fire teachers accused of misconduct. the bill was introduced by alamo assembly woman joan buchanan and it would speed up the appeals process after a teacher is fired. california's largest teachers union is backing the measure. it fought a similar proposal last year that would have given districts the power to resolve dismissal ill disputes. this morning, heavenly ski resort in lake tahoe has been fined more than $90,000 for several violations of california environmental laws. the california department of
